Firebreaks

A requirement of forestry grant approval is that fire risk is assessed and that firebreaks are put in place where deemed necessary. Insurers expect compliance with these requirements as well as having adequate maintenance.

Even if not specified by Forest Service it may be advisable to consider protecting your forestry investment with firebreaks.

A firebreak is a 6 metre (or greater if the circumstances warrant it) zone around the perimeter of a forested area that is clear of debris and other material that could act as fuel allowing the fire to cross the firebreak.

In cases where there are archaeological, water quality, biodiversity, landscape or other issues the firebreak may have to be constructed with these considerations in mind or in some cases with specific consent.

In the case of large plantations (60ha or more), Forest Service recommend that owners/managers consider placing internal firebreaks within the plantation to prevent the spread of fire.
